JOE KENT-WALTERS is Frankie Munroe: DEAD!!! (Good Fun Time)
5 stars ~
Monkey Barrel – Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh Fringe ~
Joe Kent Walters’ white-face creation, Frankie Munro, the MC of the Misty Moon Working Men’sClub, never fails to whip up a storm of mirth - and tonight, we are again happily caught up in it.
This time, we meet Frankie in hell, where he greets us like any good club compère: flinging sweeties, announcing the bar (tragically he explains only serving Fosters), and cheekily helping himself to drinks from the front row in the manner of a certain Johnny Vegas in his Late ’n’ Live days. He styles himself the entertainment officer, claiming to be similar to one at a Pontins holiday camp.
He archly drops in that he’s rubbing shoulders in damnation with Ozzy, Keith Chegwin and Chas, though Dave has yet to arrive.
But Frankie’s got bigger worries because since his recent death, Vegas Dave has taken over theMisty Moon, threatening its proud heritage of egg-and-crisp snacks and Worthington’s on tap, with dangerous innovations. The club must be saved and, amid audience-led choruses of Sex Bomb, fate intervenes.
The entire time it has been pure romping chaos: gleefully anarchic, joyous and deliciously silly, with the crowd all too ready to join in. Frankie’s hell is our heaven.
