ED NIGHT: Your Old Mucker

5 stars ~

Monkey Barrel - Hive 2, Edinburgh Fringe ~

Ed Night welcomes us into his world with the cheeky ease of Maybe It’s Because I’m a Londoner drifting through the speakers. What follows is a rapid-fire cascade of material so dense with laughter that punchlines are still ricocheting while the next ones are out and running.

We leap from menus in hieroglyphs, to the claim he’s today’s Sylvia Plath, an octopus gag that becomes gloriously visual, Monzo, circadian rhythms, a guide dog, and a grandfather whose quirks may or may not be a metaphor. Somewhere in there, dental health becomes a running theme - apparently it is fine to pop in on your dentist socially.

More topics cascade, of ghosts, biscuit tins, Duolingo, betting shop behaviour, his least-favourite religion, and an almost throwaway but thought-provoking remark about Van Gogh. It’s nuanced, sometimes cryptic, but never less than faultlessly entertaining.

Ed's overall view is that it is good to count your blessings in the morning - and embrace being a little crazy. A brilliantly crafted, relentlessly funny hour that leaves you both happy and deliciously intrigued.
