DOM McGOVERN: Prize Hog ★★★★

Dom McGovern lands with the energy, charm and comic confidence of a far more experienced performer. His fast-paced style and polished delivery occasionally recall early Tom Allen, although Dom is unmistakably his own man, having the look of a contemporary-styled Gen Z marketing executive with, he suggests, the spirit of Noël Coward.

Already enjoying a devoted following of young women and a smattering of gay men, he elicits uproarious laughter with stories ranging from being bullied as a musical-comedy child to feeling like Wallace & Gromit among 1,500 beautiful gay men on a Brazilian beach. LinkedIn, Joe Wicks, Wii Fit and adding a J at the beginning of words all receive his mischievous attention.

A very Catholic upbringing, body dysmorphia and an eating-disorder diagnosis could make for darker material, yet his natural warmth and comic expertise ensure the humour remains strong. An impressive, engaging and very funny debut.
