CARL DONNOLLY: EXTRA SHOW! ★★★★

Multi-awardwinning Carl Donnelly celebrates his 15th Edinburgh Fringe with the relaxed confidence of a consummate performer whose apparently effortless humorous storytelling has long established him as one of the most appreciated comedians on the comedy circuit. Even in this early work-in-progress, we are treated to something rather special: a fascinating glimpse of an already accomplished show being honed into final shape, complete with spontaneous asides and fresh ideas that emerge in the moment. The audience enjoyed their time with Carl, laughing throughout.

Drawing on family life, relocating to Australia with two small children, and the intriguing difference in attitude that he relished on his brief return to London his home town, such as it being the only place on earth where it is absolutely fine to openly dislike your job, Carl weaves relatable anecdotes with clever observations and natural warmth. 

A throwaway observation that it feels very wrong to drink 0% beer while driving, balances well against a beautifully judged tale about his last evening with his late father adding unexpected poignancy amidst the laughs induced by his creatively nonsensical approach to this unavoidable situation. 

Funny, engaging and wryly perceptive, this show is already impressive and when fully honed it will surely surpass its current four-star billing.
